18.05.2015 NEW-BUILD PROJECT MARKS FIRST UK APPEARANCE OF TOPMAX FROM HÜNNEBECK
The construction of two new 10-storey student accommodation buildings on Beith Street, Glasgow, built by main contractor George Downing ConstructionLimited, has seen the first UK appearance of a new steel frame table formwork system from Hünnebeck. The result was a considerable increase in the speed of construction compared to traditional methods, without any compromise to the quality of the concrete structure of the buildings.
Hünnebeck’s TOPMAX® system is already proven in the German market where it was originally developed in 2009. It is also used throughout Western Europe and North America. The system was specifically developed for efficiency when forming large soffit areas that feature regular ground-plans and repetitive geometries. “TOPMAX was chosen for this project to demonstrate the reduced construction time the system offers,” comments Hünnebeck’s Kurt Sartorius. “The system uses a small number of components, thus making pre-assembly straightforward and ready for action with minimal delays.” This is highlighted in that assembly of a table, including edge protection, can take up to only 18 minutes for a 13m2 table.
The TOPMAX table forms are built around a strong, low-maintenance, powder-coated steel frame and use high-grade plastic form lining. This further reduces site cleaning, repair work and the re-fixing of plywood during lifting cycles. The TOPMAX system allows a wide variety of configurations to be assembled, with various options for infill/fix and strike to core areas.
“The system has been designed to be as time-efficient, cost-effective and as practical as possible,” adds Kurt. “The TOPMAX C-Hook can safely lift 2 combined tables, which has a total area of 26 m² including edge protection, in a single crane lift. This is without having to remove existing slab edge protection, increasing site safety, reducing crane time and skilled labour required on site. Therefore all associated site costs are reduced.”
“TOPMAX has certainly proved to be ideal for this project,” adds Project Manager Eamonn O’Donnell from sub-contractor, PJ Carey (Contractors) Ltd, part of the Carey Group plc. He continued, “The quality of construction it allows has been excellent, and the speed has contributed towards lower overall costs for the project, as a result of the team opting to use this system over traditional methods.”
